Who I am
Hello, I’m Riana, a potter working from a small cottage in the rolling hills of the Mid North Coast, NSW. I started working with clay in 2020 and quickly fell in love with the slow, quiet process of handbuilding and the way each piece comes out a little different from the last. I like pieces that feel like they have been held, pieces with soft shapes, texture, and character, things that feel at home on a wooden table with good food and friends.
The name r h e a (pronounced Ree) comes from my nickname, Ree, and the word rhea meaning flow. That feeling of flow is why I love working with clay so much, it is where I feel most like myself and where most of my ideas seem to appear.
Alongside ceramics, I also create Studio Rhea, a monthly mail club where I send out zines, prints, recipes, playlists, photos, and little paper goods. It is a way for me to share not just pottery, but all the things that inspire me and my work, like cooking, books, music, small makers, and slow creative hobbies. It is really just an extension of the studio in paper form.
I also run handbuilding classes where we make pottery in a relaxed, small group setting. It is always more about the experience than perfection, and people usually leave a bit muddy, very proud, and wanting to make more.
Everything I make, whether it is pottery, a zine, or a class, comes from the same place. I just want to make beautiful, useful things and help people feel creative and a bit more connected to slow, handmade life.
